“CHEONGSAM X ÁO DÀI
CROSSOVER” FASHION PRESENTATION

Cheongsam is officially recognised as one of the Intangible Cultural Heritages of Hong Kong. Symbolising the connection between the two places and cultures, the presentation will showcase the specially-designed crossover collection of Oriental Cheongsam and Áo dài. The three fashion designers, all with a strong background in making cheongsams, take the classic designs a step further, presenting collections where cultural elements cross paths.

CLASSICS ANEW – JANKO LAM

Janko Lam graduated from Caritas Bianchi College in Hong Kong and subsequently joined the Hong Kong Fashion Designers Association and gained experience as a costume designer for stage and drama productions at Hong Kong’s local TV channel, TVB.

Prior to launching her brand, Janko’s collection inspired by tree-ring patterns won the EcoChic Design Award Hong Kong in 2011, and she obtained an internship to work at a top sustainable fashion design brand in London. Janko collaborated with Esprit to launch the first local collection using recycled textiles. Further recognition and accolades came in 2013 when she was awarded the “40 Under 40” Award (Fashion) from Perspective magazine.

Fuelled by her love and passion for Chinese costumes, she conceptualised and launched the “Classics Anew” brand in 2014.

SHOWPIECE CONCEPTS: TOUCH POINT

The Hong Kong cheongsam and Vietnamese áo dài share similar features. This special collection’s inspiration comes from Chinese and Vietnamese rivers, the blending of the waters signifying the mixture of two cultures. By using a patchwork method, dark and light fabrics are mingled together, matching with the striped pattern of the fabrics, symbolising the current of the rivers. The combination of two pieces of fabric also represents the harmonious and shared connections of the two cities.

LOOM LOOP – POLLY HO

Polly Ho graduated from Hong Kong Polytechnic University before continuing her studies at the University of Central England. Prior to establishing her own brand, Polly worked for Misa Harada Millinery in London and was brand consultant for numerous Chinese brands. Shortly after winning the corporate fashion project for the Philippe Starck-designed The South Beach hotel in Singapore, Polly launched her own brand Loom Loop. The brand symbolises a mixture of traditional craftsmanship of Canton silk (from modern-day Guangzhou) with a modern approach to epitomise contemporary individualism imbued with a Chinese cultural twist.

Polly subsequently presented her collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo in 2015, Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo 2016 and 2017, New York Fashion Week in 2016 and 2017, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Beijing 2017 and Shanghai Fashion Week 2018.

SHOWPIECE CONCEPTS: MANG ZHONG

The SS19 collection is Inspired by Asian folklore, specifically “Grain in Ear” (“mang zhong”), referring to the solar terms of the lunar calendar. Mang zhong indicates the coming of summer: “mang” refers to the harvest of ramie plants such as wheat, while “zhong” signifies the sowing season of cereal crops. The arrival of “mang zhong” indicates that farmers have started their busiest period in the fields. The prints of mango and pomegranate represent a contemporary and summery definition of “mang zhong”.

Complementing the agricultural aspect is the Lucky Cat, the designer’s childhood design, which represents the vitality and energy of animals. The fruity colour palette of pink and yellow matches with the theme “mang zhong”, whereas the colour blue represents the sky and the sea. Together, they show the vitality of summer.

Loom Loop always emphasise on the sustainability. Eco-ink is applied via digital printing, fuelling the Canton-silk pieces with environmental friendliness.

YI-MING – GRACE CHOI

Grace Choi was born in Shanghai and raised in Hong Kong, graduating in fashion design and business. She spent 10 years of her early career in the modelling field and was a successful model in the city. Her strong educational background and prior experience in the fashion industry, coupled with her burning passion towards the field, led to the launch of her own label Yi-ming in 2011.

The brand name Yi-ming is derived from her name. The label aims to introduce cheongsam to the new generation with a contemporary touch. The brand concept is fuelled by Grace’s fascination with distinctive oriental fashion cultures and styles. She looks to create a modernised, chic interpretation in an East-meets-West collection. In recognition of her vision and unique designs, Grace received the “40 Under 40” Award (Fashion) from Perspective magazine in

SHOWPIECE CONCEPTS: “FLORALINFINITY” DAY AND NIGHT

The collection is inspired by Vietnam’s national flower - the lotus, loved for its delicate pink petals and velvety green leaves, as well as its quiet and peaceful motion in the water. The collection’s palette is based on this colour combination, featuring soft pink floral lace with light green leaves as a highlight. Transparent sequin mesh and nude-colour applique floral lace are used as lining for the inner layer, representing Hong Kong’s busy, vibrant city life.

The overall style is feminine, contemporary and sophisticated: just like the women in Hong Kong and Vietnam!
