RMB Internationalisation: An Emerging Currency for Payment, Investment and Financing

The progress in RMB internationalisation has been accelerating in recent years, with the solid expansion in cross-border RMB trade settlement activities and the robust “dim-sum” bond market established in Hong Kong. According to SWIFT, RMB overtook the euro to become the second most used currency in global trade finance after the US dollar in 2013, and it also entered the top five of world payment currencies in late 2014. The launch of the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect Programme in November 2014 further promoted the use of RMB as an investment currency as well as augmented the gradual opening up of the Mainland China’s capital accounts. In this session, a panel of industry experts will explore the developments and opportunities in using RMB for payment, investment and financing.

In today’s climate of rapid business expansion, Indonesian companies should be vigilant in protecting their intellectual property rights. To help put matters in perspective, case studies will be used as illustrations to underscore key points.

Session 2: Panel discussion on "Resolving Business Disputes with Ease – ADR is the Way"

This panel will provide practical guidance on questions that business people may have regarding the international commercial arbitration process in Hong Kong. Discussions will centre on how the process could benefit concerned parties in resolving disputes, as well as the reasons for choosing Hong Kong as the place to hold international commercial arbitration proceedings. The session will focus on the following questions in particular:

  • Why do parties choose arbitration rather than litigation?
  • How are arbitrators in Hong Kong appointed by Indonesian lawyers?
  • What control over procedure, evidence and costs in Hong Kong arbitration can parties (including Indonesian parties and their Indonesian lawyers) have?
  • Can Indonesian parties be represented by Indonesian lawyers in Hong Kong arbitrations?
  • How do Indonesian parties and their lawyers work with Hong Kong lawyers and experts? Should they choose to do so?
